Johnny Depp is stepping back into the Hollywood spotlight with a brand-new movie — and it’s already filming in Spain!
Lionsgate announced on April 14 that Depp is starring in Day Drinker, a mysterious thriller directed by Marc Webb. The film also stars Outer Banks actress Madelyn Cline and Oscar-winner Penélope Cruz.
In the first look at the movie, Depp, 61, is seen holding a drink and staring off-camera, looking intense and mysterious — a perfect vibe for the role he’s playing.
What’s Day Drinker About?
Depp plays a strange and secretive man who shows up on a private yacht. Onboard, he meets a bartender played by 27-year-old Cline. Things take a dark turn when they both get mixed up with a dangerous criminal — played by Cruz, 50. According to the story, the characters are connected in surprising ways no one saw coming.
The movie also features Manu Ríos, Arón Piper, Juan Diego Botto, and Anika Boyle in the cast.
Director Marc Webb — best known for The Amazing Spider-Man movies and Disney’s upcoming live-action Snow White — said he’s thrilled to be working on the project.
“We’re in a beautiful location with a fantastic crew and a thrilling, ferocious story to tell,” Webb said. “This is gonna be fun.”
Depp and Cruz Reunite On Screen
This movie marks another reunion for longtime friends Depp and Cruz, who have worked together before in Blow (2001), Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides (2011), and Murder on the Orient Express (2017).
It’s also Depp’s first major Hollywood movie since 2018’s Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald. After a few years out of the spotlight — including his highly publicized court battle with ex-wife Amber Heard — Depp made a comeback with the French film Jeanne du Barry, which opened the 2023 Cannes Film Festival. He also directed the upcoming film Modi.
At a Cannes press conference last year, Depp commented on the idea of a “comeback.”
“I keep wondering about the word ‘comeback’ because I didn’t go anywhere,” he said. “Maybe people stopped calling… but I’ve been here the whole time.”
