As The White Lotus nears its dramatic end, Walton Goggins’ character, Rick Hatchett, is playing a key role in the season’s drama. However, for Goggins, acting in the show was challenging in unexpected ways.
In a recent interview on The White Lotus podcast, Goggins explained that the hardest part of his experience was feeling like the “downer” on set. He said that his character, Rick, is isolated and has a very serious, intense storyline. This made it hard for him to connect with the rest of the cast, who were in a much lighter mood. Goggins often found himself sitting alone during breaks because he couldn’t get into the fun atmosphere of the group. He explained, “I just couldn’t be around them.”
Filming was even more isolating than he thought it would be. Goggins recalled a moment on a boat where he felt trapped and anxious because his character, Rick, has similar claustrophobic feelings. He said he filled the boat with “negative energy,” making it hard for others to be around him.
One of his co-stars, Aimee Lou Wood, noticed and told him he wasn’t being fun, which Goggins was grateful for. He appreciated her honesty because it helped him realize how deeply he had gotten into his character.
In a big moment on the show, Rick finally comes face to face with the man he believes murdered his father, something he has been chasing since the start of the season.
